Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The original institution I decided was the right institution to distribute my product was IPC media. After completing my finished product of a vintage music magazine I feel that IPC media is still the correct institution to distribute my magazine.

I believe that this institution is perfect for my vintage music magazine as it is now a subsidiary of Times Inc. IPC Media, publisher of magazines including Marie Claire, NME and What's on TV, is to be rebranded by its US-based owner to Times Inc UK. The variety and range of the magazines produced by this institution are excellent. However they do not have a Vintage music magazine that targets at a younger audience. This gap in the market that my product fits into may interest them.

Another aspect of this company that I think is excellent is the range of cross media. The website is exciting and their use of digital technology is exactly what my audience needs. Also the use of digital technology also relates to an aspect on the contents page of my product as you can decide how you want your magazine, and you can subscribe online to the product and then receive the magazine digitally or view paper copy however the buyer prefers.
The only magazines currently on sale from IPC Media are NME and Uncut which are both very masculine so I hope that the feminine appeal of my magazine will entice them to want to publish and distribute it. I like the way they have lifestyle magazines as I believe that female readers like to see links between music and fashion.

Steve Neale said that genre is about 'repetition and difference'. I have used conventions to anchor the genre of my magazine but i have also broke some conventions to appeal to the target audience of the product, I believe that adding in the fashion and beauty tips into the music magazine will achieve this.

Times Inc have over 90 brands, 50 global offices and millions of loyal customers. This institutions global offices are is places such as: New York, Amsterdam, Bangalore, Birmingham, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Seattle, SF Bay Area, Stamford and Tampa, due to all these global offices this institution gives my product the potential to be globally marketed. Also the institution having global offices is an excellent factor as it could put my product in regional, national and global markets.

Evaluation question 4+5

Target audience research-draft of front cover, contents and double page spread, this is what the results show
The first question I asked for my target audience research was “Can you identify the music genre from the front cover?” It was very clear from my results that my target audience understood what the music genre of my magazine was, and that it clearly was vintage.
The next question I asked was “Is synergy created between the pages and how?” The results from this question were a mixture. Some respondents replied yes, due to items such as the use of red, fonts and the use of black. But then others replied no due to originally having three different background colours which does not create synergy. To corrected this I made the front cover and contents page have the same colour background and through all pages used the colour scheme of red, blue and black which has helped for me to improve the synergy of my pages.

Next I asked “are there iconic, symbolic or indexical signs, and what are they?” from this question the answers I got were mainly including the use of the records and the costumes I used for my photographs. The use of the vintage dresses makes the genre of the magazine very noticeable and very typical of its genre.

The next question I asked was “what do you think the target audience is, age and gender?” from the answers it is clear that the target audience is from 16-20+ and that the magazine is very female based due to the fashion and beauty aspects of the magazine.

Then I asked “what representations are created?” the answers from this question were youthfulness, vintage dresses, hair and makeup styles and modern vintage. Also that the magazine is very female based.

The next question I asked was whether respondents believed if the magazine was formal or informal and the majority of the respondents said that the magazine was formal due to no slang or swear words being used.

Finally, the last question I asked was “is there anything missing from the magazine?” and the only feature respondents felt to be missing was not enough on the front cover. So I have changed the front cover and added more information on.
